Powerfully Possessed - No Costumes Necessary!

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

- 1 John 4:4 (NKJV)

Every year on October 31 st , when everyone else is seemingly getting dressed up in their costumes, preparing to go out into the streets with buckets for candy, my husband and I turn off the front porch lights to demonstrate our lack of participation in the events of the day. A few little ones still come by to knock on our door, to which we politely inform them that we do not celebrate Halloween, but hope that they will stay safe in the neighborhood. We’ve gotten used to the half smiles from the parents trailing behind, and the weird looks from the teens who couldn’t fathom missing out on a day to stay up late and gorge themselves full of candy. Our children also know the drill as well, as we have been careful since they were young, to inform them that we live in a spiritual world. Walking through 1 John 4:1-6, scripture starts out by saying as much; that “many false prophets have gone out into the world,” and we are urged to test the spirits as to whether they are of God.

One may see the celebration of Halloween as just a little harmless fun; but a little leaven, leavens the whole lump (Gal. 5:9), and a 2-second google search on the origins of Halloween, will quickly inform you that the celebration of this day began with the ancient Celts who also believed in spirits. October 31 st being the end of the Harvest season, also came with the belief that the veil between the living and the dead thinned on this day, allowing spirits to walk the earth. Therefore, costumes were worn and bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits. Well if one was truly concerned with warding off evil spirits, the Word of God already has an answer for that! 1 John 4:4 declares that if you are of God, then you have overcome any spirit that is in this world, “because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” I have no need to walk around the neighborhood in a costume on October 31 st because my costume is internal and I can’t take it off! I have been POSSESSED by Christ, and I have no room for any other spirits of this world.

My costume is Christ, and He lives in me!

Going back up to 1 John 4:2, I can boldly declare that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, and I am of God! He has invaded my tent, and as for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord! (Joshua 24:15)

As POSSESSED Christ carriers, we can not just accept the things of this world based on fun and familiarity. In doing so, as 1 John 4:5 suggests, we would be speaking as of the world, and the world would gladly hear us if we joined in their fun. As the decorations of ghouls and goblins go up around your neighborhood this month, perhaps you can take a moment to consider if you have rightfully discerned which is the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. Do you still require a costume, or are you already Powerfully POSSESSED?

As October 31st approaches, ask yourself; What will you be wearing? What will you be declaring? As for me and my house . . . no costumes necessary!
